Tor PLUS I2P, is this recommended for maximum anonymity?

Post by Chef K »

I'm asking this because I'm seeing conflicting information...

I've seen YouTubers recommend I2P Plus Tor[url/] because it will give you more hops and nodes, However, [url=http://lhbd7ojcaiofbfku7ixh47qj537g572zmhdc4oilvugzxdpdghua.b32.i2p/topics/3637-i2p-over-tor]others like zzz say that you shouldn't!

Should I use I2P through Tor?

Please let me know...

i'm going to assume RTP was recommending using tor and i2p together like tor for clearnet/i2p for darknet or something, do not run i2p through tor

To elaborate:

You should not run i2p on top of Tor (i2p-over-tor), because it puts unnecessary load on the Tor exit nodes (same reason you shouldn't torrent over tor), and also may interfere with p2p security features (because all i2p-over-tor users share the exit node IP addresses).

As for tor-over-i2p, there might or might not be some bridge nodes hosted on top of i2p, I don't see any obvious issues with using them. But it also might not be necessary unless you are in a country with internet censorship (where tor and its regular bridges are unavailable but i2p is available).

If you mean using tor-over-i2p directly (as in without specifying a bridge node inside of i2p), it also is not necessary because it creates unnecessary load on your i2p outproxy (which is stormycloud by default). If it even works.

zzz.i2p is the blog (previously a forum) by one of the main developers of Java I2P. It is safe to assume that they know a lot about the network.

The zzz.i2p post also says that connections to i2p from tor are now blocked (so you won't even be able to use i2p-over-tor). But due to the nature of distributed p2p networks such as i2p, this change has not yet been propagated to all the nodes (it will once everyone updates their router, which might happen eventually).
